I choose Herbalife as a company that, in my honest opinion, is creating unsustainable profit. There are two reasons: an approach that tends to lie or to hide details to the customers, and a suspected pyramidal selling system. Focusing on the first point I would like to start saying that several influential journals, like the “Journal of Hepatology”, published studies on the negative effects of these products on our health. This was also confirmed by several customers that wrote about hepatotoxicity, gastritis, stress and so on, after the assumption of Herbalife food supplements. These negative feedbacks are often removed by forums, so that the image of the company is safe. Another important thing is that the so-called Herbalife “health coaches” are (often) not competent, with no scientific preparation. Also the nobel prize for medicine, Louis Ignarro, frequently quoted by Herbalife supporters, has received 1 million dollars to sponsor the company. Finally, they also omit the percentage of the ingredients in the products. On the second point, Herbalife was investigated for using a pyramidal selling system by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a system forbidden by the law because misleading. I can conclude saying that Herbalife is creating unsustainable profit. They are hiding very important details for the health of their customers, making profit using the images of “miraculous products”, that can easily deceive people who want “gain without effort”. Secondly they are investigated for being against the law. I think this company is not creating real, sustainable value for all the stakeholders, especially for customers and government. They are not socially sustainable, because they could loose credibility and/or maybe be punished by the law, so that the extraordinary profit they earned these years could be suddenly destroyed.
I found that an example of unsustainable firm is H&M. That is because, as a fashion firm, it uses lots and lots of resources, from cotton, to electricity, oil and water. The problem is that this firm is growing consistently every year and this logically appears to increase the amount of resources used by this company. However, H&M states that the cotton (which is the material used the most) used is organic that has a lighter environmental impact, but only the 13.7% of cotton used by H&M is organic. So, this company with is massive consumption of resources should operate more sustainably than it already does.

ValuJet Airlines was founded in 1992 and was known for its cost-cutting measures. All of the airline's planes were purchased used from other airlines, very little training was provided to workers, and contractors were used for maintenance and other services. The company quickly developed a reputation for its lax safety. In 1995, the U.S. military refused ValuJet's bid to fly military personnel because of safety worries, and officials at the FAA wanted the airline to be grounded.
In 1996, an American Trans Air McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 being serviced at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport was destroyed by a fire caused by a chemical oxygen generator. In 1988, American Airlines Flight 132 (a McDonnell-Douglas MD-80, the successor airplane to the DC-9) had a similar accident. A fire began in the cargo hold, caused by hazardous materials (primarily hydrogen peroxide), but the crew landed the aircraft safely. After this incident, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended to the FAA that all class D cargo holds have smoke detectors and/or fire suppression systems.
Now a firm that has these behaviors in order to save money and maximize profit can be described in many ways but sustainable isn' t an adjective to be likely attributed to this firm.
Angie's List. IPO'd. $708 million market cap. Good price to sales and revenue growth. But the company has a retention rate of 75 percent. Their competition is fierce and free and insiders sold quite a few shares, historically.In the past 10 years the company has never had positive cash flow and the increase in membership is due in no small part to their promotions and a gigantic tv campaign.
H&M One of the issue of H&M company is what happens to the clothes after they’re purchased. Fast fashion is a driving force in modern consumer culture, which insistently nudges people toward buying more and more clothing, whether they need it or not. Inevitably, much of this excess finds its way into landfills. In the US alone more than 10.5 million tons of clothes end up in landfills each year, and even natural fibers may not break down easily. It’s great that H&M is replacing part of its conventional cotton supply with organic, but a landfill overflowing with organic cotton is still an overflowing landfill.
Primark is well known for operating with unethical conduct for more than a decade. After a documentary done by the BBC called Primark on the rack, it was revealed that child labour is implemented by Primark into producing clothing for customers. This led to many protests done by a large number of pressure groups, outlining Primark’s poor CSR strategies. This means that Primark has been making profit in an unsuitable way that would not last in the long term.
A company that makes unsustainable profit is Adidas because uses kangaroo skins as raw materials but mostly uses a number of factories that lack the basic rights : workers are exploited , working up to 65 hours a week for wages of misery , suffering verbal abuse and physical , are forced to work overtime even unpaid and are punished if they do not reach production targets .
Lululemon is a women’s athletic apparel. According to the article: Lululemon’s last quarterly financial statement shows the extent of the company’s troubles. Revenue at the previously fast growing company was up only slightly to $385 million from $346 million in the same period a year ago. However, net income collapsed from $47 million to $19 million. The stock is down 50% from its peak set at the start of June 2013.
Apparently the cause of having unsustainable profit is the continues entering of competitors of sportswear(e.g. Victoria's Secret PINK) and the continues changing of the field fashion industry(environment).
I think that steel industry is one of the most important and huge industries which produces unsustainable value because it totally pollutes our environment. The pollution does not depend only from the row materials treated or from the processes used to transform these materials, but also from the places where the plants are installed (such as in the case of 'Ilva', one of the most important italian steel companies which has ruined Taranto's environment) . However, I suppose that nowadays is quite difficult to solve this kind of problem because steel's production has become essential for human beings' life.

Chevron Corporation is an American multinational energy corporation. One of the successor companies of Standard Oil, it is headquartered in San Ramon, California, and active in more than 180 countries. It rapresents a perfect example of unsustainable firm because Chevron was considered responsible for creating toxic contamination 30 times larger than the Exxon Valdez, probably the largest oil-related environmental catastrophe in the world exists quietly in the Amazon rainforest. In an isolated part of Ecuador, Chevron dumped billions of gallons of toxic wastewater into the rainforest from 1964 to 1992 while operating hundreds of oil wells. Today, this waste threatens five indigenous groups with extinction and has created what experts believe could be the worst environmental disaster on the planet other than Chernobyl. Chevron intentionally discharged into Ecuador's rainforest more than 30 times the amount of oil spilled in the Exxon Valdez disaster. Much to Chevron's dismay, 30,000 rainforest dwellers stood up to this corporate goliath and filed a historic class-action lawsuit in Ecuador against the company in 2003. The lawsuit (Aguinda v. An Italian tv show called "Report" has pointed out the unsustainability of the Moncler company. The Italian company indeed decided to move the production in Transnistria, because in this way there would have been an increase in the profit of 20£ for each cloth producted. The reason of this 'increase' in the profit is given by lower salary for the Moldovans workers, respect to the ones earned by the Italian workers. Moreover Moldovans workers are completely exploited as well as they work around 13 hours a day. A difference of 20£ per cloth, becomes significant if we think that multiplied for 1 million clothes gives 20 million euros. Moreover the company is totally enviromentally unsustainable, if we think about all the geese that are continuosly plucked.
In the long list of companies that have created unsustainable profit we can also mention ExxonMobil. The reason why this business entity is considered unsustainable is because it is ranked as the second greatest contributor to CO2 and CH4 emissions at 3.22 percent of the global percentage. The company is responsible for multiple oil spills throughout the world. It was responsible for over 250,000 animal deaths and billions of salmon and herring egg deaths. This company has been fined with approximately 32 million dollars for the severe damages it has caused to the environment.
AES is a global power company that is greatly polluting the earth. For that very reason it is considered unsustainable. In the long run we will evolve to use recyclable energy that will put these companies out of business.
Recently through the internet I learned that the bags produced by Obag FullSport, made of silicone with real fur on the edge of the handles are made in a cruel manner without taking care of the ethical regulations on animals. About an unsustainable firm, I've thought about Mc Donald, as we all know, Mc donald has been accused not only for the unhealthy ingredients of its products (preservatives, hormones....), but also for the way they treat animals during the livestock. The saddest thing is that people don't care at all about this matters.
I consider an unsustainable company “Alcott”. It is a clothes company that was born some years ago. It just opened it increased their selsl and profits through selling low cost products in many Alcot’s shops in the biggest cities of Italy. Today they decrease drastically their profits because no more a large number of people buy clothes from Alcott. We can find the cause of this in the quality of their products. After some months you can’t use anymore their clothes for several types of problem in the materials or forms of clothes. They tried to focus on the maximization of profits without take care about the quality of products.

It is unsustainable because it lies and tricks people making them think that promotions would last for only a few days when they actually are endless. They make profit lying to costumers.
The example of an unsustainable firm is the likes of "GROUPON" with a product that everyone agreed was brilliant, spawning 1,000 copy-cats. But all that investment in growth and sales force didn’t have a long-term payback, and the actual value of the product to small businesses wasn’t as high as claimed, even though the simplest of customer development reveals this fact. So it IPO’ed at a $13b valuation but has dropped month-over-month to one-fourth that value and appears to be in “constant pivot mode” while they try to figure out a new, massive market for which their existing infrastructure is an asset. In other words, they’re back to seeking product/market fit, and only an immense market (and excellent fit) will counterbalance their crushing costs and pay back past investments.

Having efficient competitors such as Apple,Samsung and Sony, Nokia firm tries to get back to the market every now and then, which means it has some ups and downs and it happens in the un-sustainability of this frim.

Chanel One of the world’s most popular fashion brands is also responsible for attempting to clear out the Amazon Forest through deforestation to help develop its products. In addition, Chanel is also polluting the Amazon River with toxic chemicals, which is destroying the surrounding environment.
Meat and dairy farms create unsustainable profits. The farms need more land and water than any other firms. The standard American diet requires at least 4,200 gallons of water per day. That is insane. In the U.S alone, giant farms generate more than 130 times the amount of waste that humans do. This has huge impact on the environment, and is causing climate change.
There is a clothing's company named "Plus Point" which create an unsustainable profit to me. They produce clothing's for men and their products are well designed but the the matter of regret that the quality of their cloths are not so good. There is no durability of these cloths more than two weeks. That is why i think that it creates an unsustainable profit.

There are two reasons: an approach that tends to lie or to hide details to the customers, and a suspected pyramidal selling system. Focusing on the first point I would like to start saying that several influential journals, like the “Journal of Hepatology”, published studies on the negative effects of these products on our health. This was also confirmed by several customers that wrote about hepatotoxicity, gastritis, stress and so on, after the assumption of Herbalife food supplements. These negative feedbacks are often removed by forums, so that the image of the company is safe. Another important thing is that the so-called Herbalife “health coaches” are (often) not competent, with no scientific preparation. Also the nobel prize for medicine, Louis Ignarro, frequently quoted by Herbalife supporters, has received 1 million dollars to sponsor the company. Finally, they also omit the percentage of the ingredients in the products. On the second point, Herbalife was investigated for using a pyramidal selling system by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a system forbidden by the law because misleading.
ReplyDeleteI can conclude saying that Herbalife is creating unsustainable profit. They are hiding very important details for the health of their customers, making profit using the images of “miraculous products”, that can easily deceive people who want “gain without effort”. Secondly they are investigated for being against the law. I think this company is not creating real, sustainable value for all the stakeholders, especially for customers and government. They are not socially sustainable, because they could loose credibility and/or maybe be punished by the law, so that the extraordinary profit they earned these years could be suddenly destroyed.
I found that an example of unsustainable firm is H&M. That is because, as a fashion firm, it uses lots and lots of resources, from cotton, to electricity, oil and water. The problem is that this firm is growing consistently every year and this logically appears to increase the amount of resources used by this company. However, H&M states that the cotton (which is the material used the most) used is organic that has a lighter environmental impact, but only the 13.7% of cotton used by H&M is organic. So, this company with is massive consumption of resources should operate more sustainably than it already does.

It was responsible for over 250,000 animal deaths and billions of salmon and herring egg deaths. Floating oil can sadly still be seen around the coastal areas of this region. The company’s horrific list of other spills are:
Brooklyn oil spill which was neglected for nearly 50 years– fined $25 million
Baton Rouge Refinery pipeline oil spill – fined $2.4 million
Yellowstone River oil spill – fined $1.7 million
Mayflower oil spill – fined $2.7 million
Shockingly, the company was also known to fund multiple organizations denying anthropogenic global warming, possibly to defend its position with its oil spills. In 2014, the company released a report acknowledging climate change risk for the first time.
ConAgra food is an American packaged foods company. ConAgra was found guilty of health code violations and bacterial contaminations at its food processing facilities, which have endangered consumers and in some cases been linked to deaths.

Workers at warehouse in the UK said they were being penalized for taking sick days and made to work seven days a week.
Probably things are changing in this company because they want to survive and grow in the market.

The Australian society Gold Mines of Sardinia represents the concept of unsustainable firm. Starting from the first nineties this firm owned a gold mine in Sardinia that should have been one of the most important economical resources for this area. In just 15 years the company gained almost one hundred million euros extracting several tonnes of minerals.But in 2009 the gold finishes, and the Gold Mines of Sardinia goes back to Australia leaving Sardinia in a catastrophic condition: all the area is full of cyanide, the most dangerous venom known. To reactivate this area, Sardinia will have to allocate 11 million euros as soon as possible in order to avoid a lethal poisoning of aquifers and harvests.

ReplyDeletePeabody Energy Corporation is a private sector coal company. Their business consists of mining, sale and distribution of coal, which is used for steelmaking and electricity generation. They create unsustainable profit because they often do not take the right safety measures for they operations. Black Mesa controversy well explain their un-ethical process of working.
ReplyDeleteIn 1964 this company signed a contract with the Navajo and Hopi tribes, in order to allow the company mineral rights and the use of an aquifer in the tribes' land. Peabody Corporation pumps water from the Navajo aquifer for coal washing and to make easier the transport of extracted coal to Nevada. With these operations, the company pumped an average of 3 million gallons of water per day causing many problems to the tribes living in the semi-desertic region which had the aquifer as their main potable water source. Even they did not satisfied the National Environmental Policy Act, operations in those mines still continue nowadays.

Hence, rates of cancer cases increased exponentially, especially in children.

Nevertheless, investors still believe in the title, pushing the value of the shares of the company at $ 388, an increase of almost 400% compared to the end of the third quarter of 2008. And then there's Amazon Prime, which offers customers a free shipping in two days for an annual fee of $ 79, and that is another source of losses. ReplyDeleteIn 1997 an austrialian entrepreneur decided to establish a company named Sardinia Gold Mining in Furtei to extract gold in a huge mine. This company was just interested in the maximization of profit by the maximization of gold extraction creating unsustainable profit. They used a lot of cyanide and lead to extract it and workers started to have wealth problems (like cancers). In 2008 the abandoned the mine because the gold run out. They caused a big enviromental and social disaster because they didn’t respect the ethical, social and environmental responsabilities.

Nestlé corporation is famous for their aggressive marketing of breast milk substitute, particularly in less economically developed country. Groups such as Unicef and Save the Children claim that the Nestlé's marketing strategy of these products has led to health problems and deaths among infants in underdeveloped countries. UNICEF estimates that a formula-fed child living in disease-ridden and unhygienic conditions is between 6 and 25 times more likely to die of diarrhea and four times more likely to die of pneumonia than a breastfed child. They are known as one of the worst example of a business policy.

ReplyDeleteAs all Fast Fashion companies, Zara thrives on fast cycles of production: rapid prototyping, small batches combined with large variety, more efficient transportation and delivery, and merchandise that is presented “floor ready” on hangers with price tags already attached. The problem is that the side effect of such continual and rapid turnover is a new form of seemingly contradictory mass exclusivity. Moreover, lower manufacturing and labor costs mean lower costs overall, which result in lower prices, which, in turn, equal higher volume. In fact, Zara, which once manufacture all their goods in Europe, resulting in better quality control, now outsource at least 13% of their manufacturing to China and Turkey.

As everybody knows Nike company is also famous for its unsustainability, it is unsustainable from all points of views. It violates at least 12 national laws, including those on the minimum wage, child labor, working hours, insurance, labor organization and redundancies.The production process takes place mainly in Asian countries (Cambodia, Vietnam) where the "employers", especially children, are exploited and they work more than twelve hours a day, with almost inexistent wages. Also the condition for the environmental and social sustainability are not respected at all. However, the marketing strategy and the products are so innovative that we all have at home at least one pair of shoes\t-shirt made by Nike's company, despite we perfectly know what is hidden behind that logo.
ReplyDeleteMonsanto is a good example of a firm that has an unsustainable profit. As the leading producer of engineered seeds and herbicide glyphosate. This product is called Roundup and it is sold as a pesticide, but in the long run it harms the crops as the toxins accumulate into the soil. Therefore plants become infertile, forcing farmers to buy Roundup seeds that can resist the herbicide. This creates a cycle of dependency on Monsanto for both the weed killer and the only seed that can resist it. Both products are patented, and sold at inflated prices. Also exposure to the pesticide is documented to cause cancer and damage nervous systems among other damaging factors. With this circle Monsanto is forming an unsustainable profit at the hands of their customers health and finances.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, one of the most scandalous and unstainable Azienda of last years was ILVA. They had both profit and unsustainability, in the sense that they succeeded in polluting a whole city, Taranto, and its inhabitants, they also polluted the beautiful sea area and the marine ecosystem only because their aim was to earn a lot of money; another unsustainable factor is that they didn't take care of their employees and of the social-economic situation in the city, in this way they got closed and the owners have been tried.

Being so big, I don't want say that it only create unsustainable profit, but for 30 long years it polluted the Hudson River, one of the environmental treasures of the US, and only now it was forced to make up for it. Every single dollar generated through activities near the River was unsustainable because it created irreversal damage to the environment, and also to the entire community of the area.

It has been banned in 2010 because of dangerous levels of toxic chemical-substance known as 1,4-dioxane, created inadvertently due to chemical processing. Thus it is not a manufacturing ingredient and therefore 1,4-dioxane cannot be listed on ingredient labels.

According to the OSEC (Oilsands Environmental Coalition) when the industry presented their new project called "Kearl Oilsands Mine Project", they deliberate ignored opportunities to use existing technologies to aggressively reduce the GHG pollution from this proposed project, such as carbon capture and storage. Thus, they are not taking care of one of their main stakeholder (the enviroment) and they're undermining the durability of the firm just to save money and maximize their positive income in the short term.

ReplyDeleteThis company over the past ten years has received an embarrassing number of complaints regarding workers terrible conditions, intimidator firing of employees, exploitation of children in plantation of cocoa. This is the case of social unsustainability of the firm, that doesn’t take care of a major stakeholder: employees. Again, Nestle provides examples of environmental unsustainability, as the scandal of OGM products found in babies food in 2005.
An example of unsustainable firm is Groupon, with a product that everyone agreed was brilliant, spawning 1,000 copy-cats. But all that investment in growth and sales force didn’t have a long-term payback, and the actual value of the product to small businesses wasn’t as high as claimed, even though the simplest of customer development reveals this fact (ask any restauranteur). In other words, they’re back to seeking product/market fit, and only an immense market (and excellent fit) will counterbalance their crushing costs and pay back past investments.

ReplyDeleteKFC is an unstustainable firm because it destroys forests in order to make all the paper we use in its restaurants, so it doesn't have a sustainable packaging policy. Even companies like McDonald's or Starbucks started to use a (realtively) sustainable packaging. Even KFC should start to promote recycled content and enforce standards for sustainable forestry in their paper supply, such as environmentally-friendly paper products. KFC UK started to look forward to use sustainable paper products while KFC USA did not.

In the past they could even stop the selling of an other drug (really similar to their one), that used to has lower costs, just passing through some governmental practices.

Because tobacco is considered the single greatest cause of preventable death globally and the cigarette's chemical addictives are highly polluting, of course such a business, which promotes a massive production and consumption worldwide (also financing and bribing governing bodies in order to abolish restrictions and smoking bans), can be placed among those firm operating in a socially and enviromentally unsustanaible way, since profits are earned to the detriment of humans and enviroment's wealth.
ReplyDeleteOne of the worst companies regarding environmental sustainability is Peabody Energy, which is is the world's largest private-sector coal company (this makes sense since coal is one of the most polluting fossil fuels). As a result of its unsustainable profit, the company is suffering a drastic price fall in its shares which is leading to a deeper loss in the company, and if conditions don't improve soon, Peabody Energy could be joining several other coal producing peers on the pathway toward bankruptcy.

This brought to its failure. The cause of this failure is not known, and attempts to stop the flow of gas by pumping liquid directly into the well in order to seal the rupture have been unsuccessful.In a desperate attempt to arrest the spillage, SoCal Gas has drafted in a number of engineers – including several experts who helped to contain the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico – to devise a strategy to fix the well.The reason for this delay is that the team has been left with no option but to drill all the way down to the base of the well – which sits more than 2,500 meters (8,000 feet) underground – in order to locate and fix the source of the leak. All of the airline's planes were purchased used from other airlines, very little training was provided to workers, and contractors were used for maintenance and other services. The company quickly developed a reputation for its lax safety. In 1995, the U.S. military refused ValuJet's bid to fly military personnel because of safety worries, and officials at the FAA wanted the airline to be grounded.
ReplyDeleteIn 1996, an American Trans Air McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 being serviced at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport was destroyed by a fire caused by a chemical oxygen generator. In 1988, American Airlines Flight 132 (a McDonnell-Douglas MD-80, the successor airplane to the DC-9) had a similar accident. A fire began in the cargo hold, caused by hazardous materials (primarily hydrogen peroxide), but the crew landed the aircraft safely. After this incident, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended to the FAA that all class D cargo holds have smoke detectors and/or fire suppression systems.
Now a firm that has these behaviors in order to save money and maximize profit can be described in many ways but sustainable isn' t an adjective to be likely attributed to this firm.

Their competition is fierce and free and insiders sold quite a few shares, historically.In the past 10 years the company has never had positive cash flow and the increase in membership is due in no small part to their promotions and a gigantic tv campaign.

ReplyDeleteOne of the issue of H&M company is what happens to the clothes after they’re purchased. Fast fashion is a driving force in modern consumer culture, which insistently nudges people toward buying more and more clothing, whether they need it or not. Inevitably, much of this excess finds its way into landfills. In the US alone more than 10.5 million tons of clothes end up in landfills each year, and even natural fibers may not break down easily. It’s great that H&M is replacing part of its conventional cotton supply with organic, but a landfill overflowing with organic cotton is still an overflowing landfill.
Primark is well known for operating with unethical conduct for more than a decade. After a documentary done by the BBC called Primark on the rack, it was revealed that child labour is implemented by Primark into producing clothing for customers. This led to many protests done by a large number of pressure groups, outlining Primark’s poor CSR strategies. This means that Primark has been making profit in an unsuitable way that would not last in the long term.

Revenue at the previously fast growing company was up only slightly to $385 million from $346 million in the same period a year ago. However, net income collapsed from $47 million to $19 million. The stock is down 50% from its peak set at the start of June 2013.

ReplyDeleteI think that steel industry is one of the most important and huge industries which produces unsustainable value because it totally pollutes our environment. The pollution does not depend only from the row materials treated or from the processes used to transform these materials, but also from the places where the plants are installed (such as in the case of 'Ilva', one of the most important italian steel companies which has ruined Taranto's environment) . However, I suppose that nowadays is quite difficult to solve this kind of problem because steel's production has become essential for human beings' life.

Greenpeace decided to examine his products (as well as some of other brands) and found out that they produces toxic and harmful substances dangerous for the environment and also for us.
The most glaring example of unsustainable profit creation is the recent scandal of Volkswagen: this company installed altered engines on their cars in order to hide the excessive polluting emissions, cheating the controls made upon these emissions, so that they could have taken profit from the selling of their cars, even if it involved damaging the environment.

In two hair dyed of Wella are toxic and carcinogenic substances prohibited by the law, which may have caused the pathology of tumor that affects the hairdresser of 63 years old that has used this product for the least two decades, inhaling the harmful substances contained.

In the area of Servola, which is adjacecen to the ironwork, the levels of air pollution overcome those of Taranto. The health of local people is worrying, infact many of them are starting to get sick and unfortunately also to die. In the area of Servola, which is adjacecen to the ironwork, the levels of air pollution overcome those of Taranto. The health of local people is worrying, infact many of them are starting to get sick and unfortunately also to die. This firm does not create a sustainable profit, with respect for the environment and for the citizens.

One of the successor companies of Standard Oil, it is headquartered in San Ramon, California, and active in more than 180 countries. It rapresents a perfect example of unsustainable firm because Chevron was considered responsible for creating toxic contamination 30 times larger than the Exxon Valdez, probably the largest oil-related environmental catastrophe in the world exists quietly in the Amazon rainforest.
ReplyDeleteIn an isolated part of Ecuador, Chevron dumped billions of gallons of toxic wastewater into the rainforest from 1964 to 1992 while operating hundreds of oil wells. Today, this waste threatens five indigenous groups with extinction and has created what experts believe could be the worst environmental disaster on the planet other than Chernobyl. Chevron intentionally discharged into Ecuador's rainforest more than 30 times the amount of oil spilled in the Exxon Valdez disaster. Much to Chevron's dismay, 30,000 rainforest dwellers stood up to this corporate goliath and filed a historic class-action lawsuit in Ecuador against the company in 2003. The lawsuit (Aguinda v. ChevronTexaco) has the potential to set an important legal precedent that could benefit millions of vulnerable people worldwide. The case is the first in history where rainforest tribes have been able to gain jurisdiction in their own courts over a large American oil company.
Procter and Gramble is a multinational producing detergents, cosmetics and food. Some people consider it a dangerous and unsustainable firm and it has been the focus of many protests carried out by animal welfare organizations all around the world. According to these societies, the company experiences its products on animals. In addition, some of those products are really dangerous for water pollution.

Rather than investigate and warn of real dangers, they have gone after farmers for dubious claims of water contamination, while treating milk spills as they should have treated oil spills. Even worse, the EPA has concluded that there is no law preventing it from doing “research” on Americans. ReplyDeleteI found H&M as an example of unsustainable firm. By its nature, fast fashion is a volume business, which is exactly what makes it a strain on the planet.
ReplyDeleteH&M manufactures at least 600 million items each year and operates more than 3,200 stores in 55 countries . If you include its subsidiary brands, such as COS, that number jumps above 3,500 stores, and the company is expanding its locations by 10% to 15% each year. To operate those stores—not to mention manufacture and ship the clothes that fill them—requires a staggering amount of resources, from energy-hungry cotton to electricity, oil, and water.
Even if H&M manages to mitigate its environmental footprint slightly from one year to the next, its business continues to grow, and that footprint remains enormous—and far from sustainable.
An Italian tv show called "Report" has pointed out the unsustainability of the Moncler company. The Italian company indeed decided to move the production in Transnistria, because in this way there would have been an increase in the profit of 20£ for each cloth producted. The reason of this 'increase' in the profit is given by lower salary for the Moldovans workers, respect to the ones earned by the Italian workers. Moreover Moldovans workers are completely exploited as well as they work around 13 hours a day. A difference of 20£ per cloth, becomes significant if we think that multiplied for 1 million clothes gives 20 million euros. Moreover the company is totally enviromentally unsustainable, if we think about all the geese that are continuosly plucked.

The reason why this business entity is considered unsustainable is because it is ranked as the second greatest contributor to CO2 and CH4 emissions at 3.22 percent of the global percentage. The company is responsible for multiple oil spills throughout the world. It was responsible for over 250,000 animal deaths and billions of salmon and herring egg deaths. This company has been fined with approximately 32 million dollars for the severe damages it has caused to the environment.

ReplyDeleteRecently through the internet I learned that the bags produced by Obag FullSport, made of silicone with real fur on the edge of the handles are made in a cruel manner without taking care of the ethical regulations on animals. I do not think that these highly fashionable handbags are so beautiful being realized thanks to the suffering of animals who can do nothing. I do not think that the company is trying to create sustainable values, going against the will of many. although the company still continues to sell their products in a systematic way.

BP for example but there are hundreds of similar Oil companies creating unsustainable profits either because they make profits through non-renewable resources or more importantly for the reason that if things don't change global warming will continue to get worse, completely changing our planet for the worst.

Starbucks has been under strong criticism recently because of wasteful water practices.Water ran continuously on dipper wells, which are used to wash utensils. This added up to an estimated 6.2 million gallons of water wasted each day. Moreover,due to e thin polyethylene plastic coating that stops liquids from leaking out, Starbucks cups still cannot be processed in many paper recycling systems.
In addition,Starbucks is frequently targeted by environmentalists for unsustainable practices.

ReplyDeleteAbout an unsustainable firm, I've thought about Mc Donald, as we all know, Mc donald has been accused not only for the unhealthy ingredients of its products (preservatives, hormones....), but also for the way they treat animals during the livestock. The saddest thing is that people don't care at all about this matters.

ReplyDeleteIt just opened it increased their selsl and profits through selling low cost products in many Alcot’s shops in the biggest cities of Italy.
Today they decrease drastically their profits because no more a large number of people buy clothes from Alcott.
We can find the cause of this in the quality of their products. After some months you can’t use anymore their clothes for several types of problem in the materials or forms of clothes.
They tried to focus on the maximization of profits without take care about the quality of products.

It is unsustainable because it lies and tricks people making them think that promotions would last for only a few days when they actually are endless. They make profit lying to costumers.

ReplyDeleteThe example of an unsustainable firm is the likes of "GROUPON" with a product that everyone agreed was brilliant, spawning 1,000 copy-cats. But all that investment in growth and sales force didn’t have a long-term payback, and the actual value of the product to small businesses wasn’t as high as claimed, even though the simplest of customer development reveals this fact. So it IPO’ed at a $13b valuation but has dropped month-over-month to one-fourth that value and appears to be in “constant pivot mode” while they try to figure out a new, massive market for which their existing infrastructure is an asset. In other words, they’re back to seeking product/market fit, and only an immense market (and excellent fit) will counterbalance their crushing costs and pay back past investments.

Having efficient competitors such as Apple,Samsung and Sony, Nokia firm tries to get back to the market every now and then, which means it has some ups and downs and it happens in the un-sustainability of this frim.

Meat and dairy farms create unsustainable profits. The farms need more land and water than any other firms. The standard American diet requires at least 4,200 gallons of water per day. That is insane. In the U.S alone, giant farms generate more than 130 times the amount of waste that humans do. This has huge impact on the environment, and is causing climate change.
ReplyDeleteThere is a clothing's company named "Plus Point" which create an unsustainable profit to me. They produce clothing's for men and their products are well designed but the the matter of regret that the quality of their cloths are not so good. There is no durability of these cloths more than two weeks. That is why i think that it creates an unsustainable profit.
