1) You are an entrepreneur and you want to open a private hospital in your City. Write the mission statement, describing separately its What, How and Why, distinguishing two cases:
a) You are an unethical entrepreneur who wants just to maximize profit
b) You are an ethical entrepreneur who wants to have profit operating ethically

a) WHAT: my hospital should be well equiped, with every kind of treatment and services
ReplyDeleteHOW: thanks to the wide range of treatments, the hospital will have a great amount of patients; moreover the hospital should be very furnished of different kinds of drugs in order to prescribe to patients more than one of them, even with the same effect. Treatments will not point to a brief healing, so that people have to attend more session than the ones provided.
WHY: maximize profit on the skin of patients
b) WHAT: my hospital will be well equiped, with professional physicians and the most possible range of treatments
HOW: the hospital will point to heal patients in the shorter possible term, prescribing only the necessary treatments avoiding waste of money for patients and waste of medicines in general. The hospital could not have all the existing treatments because of its choice to have only the high quality ones in order to direct people in the best hospitals for their diseases.
WHY: the hospital aims to satisfy people needs in the best possible way, making them avoide waste of time, money and health.

ReplyDeleteHOW: an hospital that is apparently and aesthetically appealing but actually uses shoddy drugs and machinery and makes patients doing analysis and insights even where is not necessary.
WHY: basically I'm more interested in making money with the diseases of the people than finding the right therapy.
b) WHAT: an hospital with very expert staff
HOW: an hospital that follows all the rules of safety and hygiene, with all high-quality machinery and drugs. An hospital that follows patient's needs and it is well organised in the scheduling of medical visits.
WHY: I'm very interest in medicine and I want to find the right and less invasive therapy for my patients. The sole objective of my hospital is hailing people or trying to minimise their pain as much as possible. There is nothing better than saving people's life.
First Case Unethical: FIRST CLASS CARE (FCC)

Second Case Ethical: LET’S HEAL (LH)
We provide excellent health services (what) thanks to the commitment of our doctors and nurse (how) in order to protect your heal in any circumstances (why).
Main differences: While both claim to provide excellent services FCC claims to be the best without any proof. From FCC statement we understand that money are important while from LH people are more important.
FCC tends to discredits public services in order to have more people paying in private hospital while LH only says that its employees are very committed to the cause
A) WHAT: My private hospital impresses all the patients for its organization, the enormous structure and all the treatments we provide.

A)My hospital guarantees an overall good service, but only focus on well-rewarded fields, such as plastic surgery, and doesn’t take risks on medical research or doctors teaching (how). It is impressive for the structure, the surface treatments reserved to paying customers and useless luxury sophistications (what). We believe in maximizing the profit for the owners, even manipulating statements and cures (why).

The second example was very weird because I've been forced to think like an avid and egoistic entrepreneur acting in the medical field. I can't tolerate a connection between an unethical way of business and the health because we're talking about human beings. But it was also useful and stimulant because I also need to understand the wrong profit's logic in order to avoid it in an hypothetical future. The final line which I used to describe the WHY of my unethical hospital is taken from a fantasy character of a famous american fiction that can summarize the wrong behavior of this medical category.

WHAT: We will offer you the best hospital services, where doctors and nurseries work only for your wellness
HOW: Through efficient doctors and nurseries, the patient could be much satisfied for the cure. We use the last discovered medical techniques, completely new machinery and newer drugs. During the recovery, we offer comforts so that patients could feel like at home, not as in a public hospital! For the payment, it could be done before or after the recovery.
Naturally, when an unethical entrepreneur chooses its mission and he/she decides to write the mission statement, the immorality aspect will be not present, but it’s implied. In this first case I don’t care to satisfy human needs ,to the disease or to the sufferance but only to the profit (in short-term) that could increase when the patient suffers and he/she needs to be cured.

Our mission is to bring you a sense of relief, when it’s possible and if it’s possible (according to the seriousness of illness)
WHAT: The hospital offers to you the best services and above of all, a staff that will try to fix you in every moment of the day
HOW: Through innovative medical techniques, new machineries ,efficient drugs and a lot of dedication by our employees in all the parties of the recovery patients will feel satisfied and loved.
If an ethical entrepreneur thinks to his objective, in run a business like a hospital, he/she will act with moral principles, taking care of sick people. He/she would like to achieve the satisfaction of human needs, in order to obtain profit, in a long-term perspective . His/her intrinsic why will never be the profit.

In my hospital everyone will pay for each service, so that I can earn from everything: tickets, simple checkups, surgeries, parking and so on. My personnel will not be too much qualified, so I have to pay them less. I will introduce a new idea: who pays more than the standard will get a better service: cleaner, bigger rooms, more attention and so on. I will not collaborate with universities for research, because the long-term is not in my mind. As a result my hospital will use obsolete technologies and methods. ReplyDeleteOur hospital is like an oasis of health with all the major conforts thanks to our investors that wanted the best for our customers. It is knowable that our hospital is not for everyone, because must be supported by an expensive medical assistance. Our doctors come from the most prestigious universties and some of them is linked to the hospital's inverstors. The objective of the hospital is to increase the profit in a short time and, of course, we are all interested in the welfare of our customers.
B) Ethical hospital
The goal of the Hospital is to offer, for free, the best medical assistance. The Hospital is not so big so our doctors, the best of the Italian universities, both public and private, who have earned advanced degrees in the most important European universities,followed by important apprenticeship, can give the right attention to every single patient. One of our goals is to raise awareness and help strangers , offering a first assitance and organize groups of volounteers that go in the needy countries. The final purpose is to be able to enlarge the hospital in the most important italian cities and in extra-european countries.
First of all, I am convinced no person, ethical or unethical, will make a difference on purpose when describing their behaviour or ,in our case-the mission statement. We all try to present ourselves in the best way (no matter why-do we aim something,do we want to manipulate,if unethical, or just because we need the acclaim of the others). The difference becomes evident because no one can escape from their inner personality and the way you think reflects not only on your words but also on your ability to express what you want to come to the target people in the best way to convince them.
